A New Landmark for China's Badminton Future: The China Badminton College

On May 30, 2024, the launch ceremony for the National Badminton College — jointly established by the General Administration of Sport of China and the People's Government of Guangdong Province — was held in Guangzhou. This marks the first single-sport college established through provincial-ministry collaboration since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, and it remains the only national-level badminton college of its kind in China.

With Guangzhou Sport University as the primary implementing institution, the College operates under a framework of "provincial-ministry co-construction, multi-stakeholder support, collaborative coordination, and shared responsibility." It serves as a national-level talent development platform integrating six core functions: education, training, competition, scientific research, think tank services, and cultural promotion. Its establishment is a concrete step toward fulfilling China's strategic goals of building a sporting powerhouse, an education powerhouse, and advancing the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area initiative.

From cultivating talent and elevating competitive performance to driving innovation and spreading badminton culture, this "national-grade" institution is entrusted with a vital mission: supplying high-caliber professionals and channeling new momentum into the development of Chinese badminton. Underpinning this ambition is infrastructure that must meet national standards — and nowhere is this more critical than in lighting.

Badminton Lighting: A Precision Game with Light

Among all indoor ball sports, badminton places the most demanding requirements on lighting.

The shuttlecock travels at extreme speeds — top players can smash at over 400 km/h. It is small and its flight path requires millisecond-level visual tracking. Athletes constantly look upward, making glare a serious interference that can compromise a crucial shot. This means a badminton hall must not only bright but also uniform, stable, and non-glaring.

For a national-level training and competition venue like the China Badminton College, lighting standards are set at the TV-broadcast international competition level. Every parameter — horizontal illuminance, vertical illuminance, uniformity, glare index, color rendering index (CRI), and color temperature — must withstand the scrutiny of professional events. This is a task beyond the capability of ordinary lights.

SCL: Professional  Sports Lighting fit National Mandate

To meet the China Badminton College's exacting requirements, SCL Sports Lighting — depends on years of technical expertise and event service experience — we have delivered a professional customized LED sports lighting solution.

As a contributing drafter of China's national standard GB/T 38539-2020 Technical Requirements for LED Sports Lighting Application, SCL have experience to achieve the professional badminton illumination. Its lighting systems are officially certified by the Badminton World Federation (BWF) and have been successfully deployed at top-tier events such as the BWF World Tour Finals, the Macau Badminton Open, and the Chinese Badminton Super League Finals. This track record of serving international-level competitions was a key factor in the College's decision to partner with SCL.

Tailoring the solution to the College's actual venue conditions, SCL's technical team implemented a rigorous approach:

Light Placement: The layout strictly follows the visual of badminton — fixtures are positioned outside the side boundary lines, at least 0.6 meters away, and avoid the area directly above the court and behind the baseline. This design fundamentally eliminates the risk of athletes being exposed to high-brightness light sources when looking upward. Combined with medium-wide beam angles, it ensures uniform illuminance across both horizontal and vertical planes — whether players are sprinting on the court or tracking a high lob, the light remains clear and stable.

Optical Performance: SCL uses anti-glare lenses co-developed with a German Standard laboratory, achieving a light transmittance of over 98% and a light efficiency exceeding 95%. The fixtures deliver a CRI of Ra > 80, fully meeting the stringent color-rendering demands of HD television broadcasts. Color temperature is precisely controlled within the 4000K–5000K range required for professional events, ensuring that the white shuttlecock remains sharply visible during high-speed flight.

Thermal Management and Build Quality: The housing is made of 6063-T5 aerospace-grade aluminum, protected by a national invention patent, effectively solving the LED heat-dissipation challenge. This ensures a rated lifespan of over 100,000 hours, with an IP68 protection rating.

Smart Control: SCL's proprietary DMX512/Internet-based intelligent control system comes with preset lighting modes for TV broadcast, professional competition, recreational play, daily training, and for cleaning — with simple switching in seconds. The system supports remote centralized management via mobile app or cloud platform, enabling scheduled on/off, real-time energy monitoring, fault alerts, and timing controls. Compliant with GB/T 38539-2020 and protected by software copyright, the system also supports private cloud deployment.
