Stock or Custom-Molded Lipstick Tubes for a First Launch?
Stock or Custom-Molded Lipstick Tubes for a First Launch?
For a first lipstick launch, an existing tube design is worth evaluating before committing to new tooling. It may already provide the required cup, mechanism and closure, while decoration gives the brand a distinct appearance. A custom-molded design becomes more relevant when the brief needs a shape or function that an existing model cannot provide.
The decision should compare approved samples, development scope and the actual quotation. A catalog listing alone does not establish availability, a minimum order quantity or a delivery date.
Define what needs to be customized
“Stock” generally refers to an existing design or tooling. It does not necessarily mean finished tubes are sitting in inventory. Confirm whether the selected configuration is currently available and which parts or finishes still require production.
Brand colors, printing and other decoration can be applied to some existing designs without creating an entirely new package. Changes to the housing, cup, mechanism or closure may have different tooling implications. Ask the supplier to separate decoration work, component modification and new tooling in the proposal so that the alternatives are comparable.
Resolve the functional fit before choosing the appearance
The cup must suit the lipstick bullet and the intended assembly process. Check the cup's internal geometry, the mechanism's travel, the bullet's position when retracted and the clearance inside the cap. A matching nominal diameter is a starting point, not an approval of the complete assembly.
Test samples with the intended product. Review movement, retention, closure and the filling or bullet-insertion process used by the manufacturing team. Different lipstick formulas and production methods can have different requirements. Do not assume that a volume marked OFC on a drawing is the amount of molten formula to pour into an assembled tube, or convert it directly into finished stick weight.

When an existing design is a useful first-launch option
An existing model is a practical candidate when its approved functional configuration meets the brief and the brand can achieve the intended presentation through available finishes. This can reduce the scope of design and tooling work. It still requires samples, decoration approval and production planning.
Compare the full configuration, not only the undecorated unit price. Relevant items include the chosen components, finish, printing, assembly, packaging for shipment and any development charges. Obtain the supplier's current order quantity and schedule for that exact version. Decoration or material changes can affect both, even when the basic mold already exists.
When new tooling is justified
New tooling may be justified by a distinctive outer geometry, a different component interface or another requirement that available models cannot meet. Custom development can also support a defined brand design strategy. It should answer a specific need rather than being treated as a requirement for every new brand.
The project then needs design review, an agreed specification, tooling trials and sample approval. Clarify which parts are being developed, who owns the tooling and design rights, how revisions are handled and what must be approved before production. A proposed design is not evidence of a completed, production-ready package.
Compare the schedules and risks on the same basis
Request milestone schedules for both options. Separate sample preparation, decoration approval, tooling work where applicable, production and shipment. Do not substitute a generic “stock is fast” claim for a confirmed project schedule.
For a first run, consider what happens if demand or the product specification changes. An existing platform may make some future changes easier, while a custom design may provide a more specific appearance or function. Neither route guarantees lower total cost, easier repeat orders or commercial success.
Make the decision from a defined sample and quotation
Sambound's lipstick packaging models can be reviewed at sambound.com as a starting point for a shortlist. Confirm the current model configuration and quotation rather than treating the catalog range as proof that every format is ready for the launch.
Choose the route that meets the approved product requirements and the launch's cost and timing constraints. Record the accepted sample, drawings, decoration specification, commercial scope and production milestones so that the order refers to a reproducible package.
